On Sunday, 20 March, from 1 PM to 2 PM please join us at the hatchery for another of our Pink salmon releases of this winter’s hatched smolts. Make it an afternoon and come tour the site as well. Our Hatchery Manager, Bill, along with some volunteers, will be on hand to help you take the fish from their temporary rearing tank and release them into the wild, in Chapman Creek.
You will be able to watch Bill net them and you will be able to carry them from the tank to the creek. This is a great opportunity to see the fish close up, to learn more about our hatchery operations, and see other salmon we are currently rearing. No need to bring any nets or buckets, we’ll provide them to you.
This is the second batch of Pink salmon we are releasing from the 2021 run. They will live the remainder of their life cycle out in Davis Bay and beyond on the Sunshine Coast. They are expected to return in the fall of 2023 to Chapman creek to spawn and complete their life cycle.
The fish you release this weekend will be critical elements of the ecosystem for their entire lives.
We will be releasing additional salmon later this spring. Watch for more news as we finalize those dates!
