JOB TITLE: Summer Student Camp Leaders
Location: Chapman Creek Hatchery
Wage: $15.65 – $20/hour
Duration: June – August 2023
Start Date June 29, 2023 (flexible)
End Date Aug 25, 2023
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
The Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society is looking for paid and volunteer camp leaders to assist in the delivery of “Explore the Wild” Summer Camps at Chapman Creek Hatchery. Campers will explore the local creek, forest and ocean ecosystem through scientific investigation, exploration, outdoor games, and wilderness skill building activities.
To be eligible for this position, you must be eligible to receive a Canada Summer Jobs Grant.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Helping create, lead and supervise camp activities
- Tracking camper attendance and communicating with parents
- Set up and clean up each day
- Following guidelines to provide a safe and positive camp environment
- Reporting to the camp director
- Working as a team to provide the best possible experience for campers
- Representing Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society in a welcoming, friendly and professional manner
Qualifications:
- Between the ages of 16 and 30
- First Aid Certification
- Experience in working with children, ages 7 to 11
- Experience in leading hands-on activities
- Knowledge of local ecology
- Bring skills like fishing, shelter building, flying tying, video creation, crafting, and more!

JOB TITLE: Hatchery Assistant Technician
Location: Chapman Creek Hatchery
Wage: $20
Duration: Minimum 6 weeks/ maximum 16 weeks from start date
Start Date: May 2023
To be eligible for this position, you must be eligible to receive a Canada Summer Jobs Grant.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Daily checking of tanks, which includes, intake, brushing nets, making sure all lids and nets are closed
- Sweep tanks, remove and record morts, attend to intake
- Feed fish, weigh out feed as per feed chart
- Assist with aspects of salmon culture including spawning, egg picking sorting and releasing
- Maintain daily record keeping as required by the Hatchery Manager
- Constant liaison with the Hatchery Manager
- Basic office administration skills
- Maintain public relations, conduct hatchery tours
- Assist with maintenance of grounds
- General housekeeping of the shop, lunchroom, washrooms, storage areas, education building and office building
- Safety awareness at all times
- Sound physical fitness is necessary due to the physical component of hatchery work
- Preference will be given to students enrolled or are interested in environmental/ biological/ fisheries management (or related studies)
- Driver’s license and vehicle an asset. (possibly will have to go to the Mill)
